Lifestyle | I Had My Drink Spiked

This is not a post I thought I would ever write or a sentence I thought I would ever say, it's one of those things that always happens to somebody else and never you, as you read this you'll probably think "that sounds terrible...but it could never happen to me..." but it could. If it can happen to me then it really can happen to anyone and that's why I'm writing this post.

I can't get into too much detail at this stage but I had my drink spiked this week and I can honestly say it was the most terrifying experience of my life. Thankfully I was with a close group of friends and my boyfriend who knew something was wrong and called an ambulance and then sat with me in A&E for the best part of 4 hours whilst I drifted in an out of consciousness, vomited until I could vomit no more (including over him - lovely) and looked like halloween come early.

I am always super careful with my drinks: I watch them being poured, I don't accept drinks from strangers and they never leave my sight so if somebody can put something in my drink they can sure as hell do it to anybody. Without getting into too much detail, my friend bought us a drink each, I took one and she the other - hers was fine, mine wasn't so it really was a complete 50/50 chance.

Thankfully I managed to escape with wounded pride (nobody wants their partner to see them in that state) and a smashed iPhone but it could have been so much worse and that doesn't even bear thinking about. If you've had your drink spiked or think you have, please, I urge you, go to the police. Don't feel like you won't be taken seriously or that they will assume you've just overstepped your drinking boundaries and had "one too many, silly girl" because they won't. It is so important that you report it and hopefully stop it happening again to somebody else. I was lucky but the next person might not be, the one before might not have been.

This page here on the NHS website can help and I urge you to seek help if you need to. Please speak to someone if you've been affected by having your drink spiked. The thought of what could have happened makes me feel physically sick and utterly furious. I am now at a stage where I don't know if I feel like I can be in that sort of social situation again because I feel like I can't trust anyone and that is a horrible feeling to have. I hope it will pass in time but knowing that it happened even when I am so vigilant terrifies me.

I know this is a ramble and it's something very serious to come back with after such a long break but I want this to reach as many of you as possible. Normal service will resume shortly I'm sure. I had so many plans to sit down and blog this week, now I want to retreat into my shell for a little while. I will return from hibernation soon!

Please, stay safe.

Giveaway | I Could Have Danced All Night... Giveaway ft Scholl

As you all know by now, my Birthday was a few weeks ago and whilst I might not want to ever make a fuss of it, I always fully intend to dance the night away and this year was no different in that respect. What was different was the fact that I hadn't kicked off my heels by midnight, replacing them with my trademark flip-flops, flats or even a handy pair of slippers (yes, that did happen once!).

When the people at Scholl contacted me to kindly offer some products to try I jumped at the chance. The shoes I wore for my birthday had pretty thin soles so the Party Feet Ultra Slim gel cushions* act similar to some shoe insoles by offering extra padding and support to your trussed tootsies.

My friend Kala suffers with terrible blisters and you can guarantee she will have a blister before we're even on our first train and being typically awkward she's also allergic to plasters! How she's made it through two marathons with her blisters is a mystery to us all! Whenever she wears heels she tends to get blisters around her heel area so I gave her the Party Feet Heel Cushions* to trial. She insisted they were delightfully comfortable and "actually make wearing heels bearable" but in true Kala fashion she still picked up blisters on the back of her heels!

The gel cushions are so super comfortable - I tried something similar a few years back and had an absolute nightmare with them; they were bulky and uncomfortable and just didn't fit! The Scholl Party Feet cushions are super slim yet still offer a wonderful cushion to the soles and balls of your feet, they fit perfectly into my shoes and they're discreet which is everything I wanted them to be.

Because I enjoyed my products so much (and so did Kala!) Scholl have kindly offered to let me host a giveaway for some super Scholl goodies like the ones I was lucky enough to try! All you have to do is fill in the Rafflecopter below, a winner will be chosen at random and contacted directly. Good luck!

Recipe | Bacon and Avocado Toast

This is my favourite brunch and makes a great snack in the week too. It's super simple and tasty and you'll be left wondering why you've never tried it before!

  • A small sourdough loaf
  • 2 small, ripe avocados
  • As much streaky bacon as you want (I use unsmoked)
  • A good handful of cherry tomatoes
  • The juice of half a lemon
  • Chilli flakes
  • Salt and pepper to taste

1. Cut your avocados in half, remove the stone and squeeze them out of their skins into a small bowl. Mash the avocados up before adding in a sprinkling of chilli flakes, the juice of half a lemon and a pinch of ground sea salt and cracked black pepper. I like to do this first so that my avocado can sit in the flavours whilst the bacon cooks.

2. Turn your grill on high (don't make my mistake if you have a grill/top oven and turn the oven on and wonder why nothing is happening for five minutes!) and cook your bacon for around ten minutes until golden and crispy, make sure you turn it at least once.

3. Place a few cherry tomatoes on the grill with your bacon, I like to start them whole and then when I turn my bacon, I take them out, chop them in half and pop them back under the grill.

4. When your bacon is nearly done, slice your sourdough and toast well. Whilst your bread is toasting, roughly chop some fresh cherry tomatoes into quarters.

5. Remove your bacon and tomatoes from the grill. Slather your toasted sourdough slices in avocado, top with bacon and freshly chopped cherry tomatoes. Add your grilled tomatoes and an extra slice of bacon to the side and tuck in.

Obviously you don't have to add the bacon, it's still delicious without it. If I opt not to have bacon I like to add in some fresh mozzarella and some basil leaves.

Lifestyle | Birthday Weekend: 24

So on Monday I turned 24 and as you'll know, I'm not the biggest fan of my own birthday because I dislike the attention but as always, I managed to drag the celebrations out for an entire weekend! This is going to be quite a picture heavy post (with even a video or two!) so sit back and enjoy!

For me, birthdays are a great time to catch up with friends and family and bring different people in your life together. As you get older you realise you have quite distinct friendship groups (or at least I do): there are the people you went to school with who know you better than you know yourself and still have photographic proof of that awful blue eyeshadow you were so enamoured with and those hoop earrings that you used to wear - keep these people on side, not least because they can expose the true you at the drop of a hat; then there's the previous work colleagues that transcended the typical colleague boundary and became genuine friends, I also group some college friends in here too and finally you have the current colleagues and the grown up friends you make through your new connections and the networking you never realised you could do! It's lovely to celebrate with them individually (and it prolongs the whole celebration!) but it's also nice to bring everyone together.

On the Friday I headed off to my favourite birthday haunt, Brickyard in Essex. You guys all know how much I love this place by now, I go there so frequently I should probably ask to buy shares in the place but for me, especially for a celebration, it is spot on. The staff are wonderful, the cocktails are mixed perfectly, the food is divine and the atmosphere is always on the money. You can have an entire night out in one place, dinner and drinks first and then dancing the night away.

I opted for my Three Floor dress that I wore to Aqua Shard a few months ago (post here) because I'm still besotted with it and I had my hair super straight for the first time in years and decided I actually quite liked it. I kept my makeup simple but defined and wore my new favourite Eyelure lashes (#141).

Here's two videos of my never-ending birthday sparkler!

On Saturday I headed back to Hakkasan which also remains one of my favourite restaurants. I wore another dress by Three Floor, this time it was the City Lights dress and I can honestly say it's probably my favourite thing that I've worn so far this year.

I accessorised with my favourite embellished clutch from Accessorize and these beautiful sandals from New Look.

I used the Hyperlapse app to film this mini Outfit of the Night post which shows the dress a lot better.

So that's my birthday done and dusted for another year. Another year older, not remotely wiser.

Restaurant Review | Mad Hatters Tea Party at The Sanderson Hotel

A few weekends ago my friend Natasha and I decided to visit the Mad Hatters Tea Party at The Sanderson Hotel for one of the most popular afternoon tea sessions in London.

I absolutely love afternoon tea and I'd wanted to visit the Alice in Wonderland themed Mad Hatters Tea Party at The Sanderson for so long that in the excitement I didn't even think to try and take decent blogging photos, I grabbed a few quick snaps on my iPhone which I'll be sharing in this post but it was such a great day that the only way you can truly do it justice is to visit for yourself - I know I'll certainly be going back.

When we arrived our table wasn't ready so we sat ourselves at the bar and indulged in a few bellinis (anybody who knows me will know how much I love a bellini!) which were mixed to perfection. The bar itself has a great vibe and atmosphere and I think it would be great for pre-night out drinks with the girls.

The menu is presented inside an old book and we had a quick peruse before we chose our teas, neither of us were feeling adventurous enough to try the proffered fruity teas and opted for "normal" tea instead. If you've not had tea brewed from leaves before you're missing out, it's the perfect cuppa.

The menu being stuck in the middle of a book added to the fairytale magic.

Look at me inching as close as possible to those delicious cakes and sandwiches!

The 'Drink Me' potion was delicious and probably my favourite part.

Who wouldn't love zebra dinnerware?

A riddle to solve...

I absolutely loved the presentation of the sugar cubes in an old wind-up jewellery box!

Who doesn't love a teapot wearing a crown?

The food was absolutely delicious and we were regularly asked if we would like any more but for such small bites, they're super filling so we didn't take advantage of this. The sandwiches were lovely although I did accidentally bite into a salmon roll and for somebody who doesn't eat fish I felt like a veggie who had just eaten meat by accident. The scones were divine, I particularly liked the savoury ones with a herb butter and I think I'll whip a batch up myself.

There's a two hour limit on the tables but as they were super busy and running behind we were allowed to stay as long as we wanted and more cocktails were consumed!

All in all, it's a wonderful day out and a really nice treat. I'll definitely be going back! At £38 per head the price is reasonable for what you receive, I'd say it was worth every penny.

Have you been?

Fashion | Missguided Colour Block Dress

I met up with my friend Natasha for Afternoon Tea at The Sanderson hotel recently and decided that the occasion definitely called for a new dress. As I'm not the tallest of girls I normally steer away from any sort of midi dress but after a quick browse on Missguided during one lunch break (always dangerous) I came across this beautiful colour block dress that I so wish I'd discovered earlier in the summer.

The length is super flattering and the black waistband cinches you in giving a real hourglass effect. It isn't the most forgiving dress to wear but I felt all Kim K when I pulled it on. Even better was the fact that it was on sale for a mere £12.49!

Unfortunately this is no longer for sale on the Missguided website so I can't send you guys the link but do check their website out, they have some gorgeous dresses and the quality is impressive.

I'll definitely be checking more midi dresses out in future!

Beauty | Kylie Jenner Inspired Makeup

You could fit what I know about the Kardashian's on the back of a postage stamp and still have space so nobody was more surprised than me when I decided, on a complete whim, a few weeks ago to recreate Kylie Jenner's makeup. I'd seen a tonne of people liking her pictures on Instagram and fell in love with her makeup so I decided to give it a whirl myself.

After spending a while on Google I decided to recreate the look above with a few twists from other looks thrown in. I love how polished and simple Kylie looks when she's wearing this makeup and whilst it's by no means an exact copy, I really like how it turned out.

Sunday Summary #1

What better way to get back into blogging than to jump on a blogger bandwagon! The 'Sunday' series (a sum up of the week leading up to one of the most delicious of days) has been going for ages and as always, I'm late to the party so I have more than a week to sum up!

The last few weeks have been so non-stop that being able to sit down a blog in my pyjamas on a Sunday morning whilst thinking about what to whip up for brunch feels like the ultimate indulgence.

The last few weeks have been manic to say the least and being brutally honest I have been burning the candle at both ends and I have finally burned out! I think we can all relate to having a bit of a life change and doing something drastic - whether that's cutting your hair short, completely overhauling your look or going out in the evening and coming home in the morning after drinking and dancing the night away (me!), sometimes you just have to let go. I did and I feel so much better for it.

I might not have been blogging myself but I've certainly been keeping up to date with others and I've fallen completely head over heels for decorating blogs at the moment. Working in the industry I do, I love design and seeing blogs full to the brim with such creative ideas and craft tips has really inspired me.

Having spent the last few weeks constantly on the go, my eating habits have really suffered as I've been almost living on convenience food; snacks grabbed here and there with the occasional salad thrown in. I'm really looking forward to getting back on the healthy eating wagon this week and I'm looking for food blogs for inspiration so please link your favourites below!

Today I'm mainly going to be scheduling posts now that I have time and the blogging bug back. My beautiful blogging friend Zoe Newlove recently posted her tips for balancing a blog with a full time job which is something I will definitely be following. Considering I'm so obsessively organised I'm surprised I didn't try and put a proper schedule in place sooner but to be honest, not having any commitment has been so freeing and I feel like I can embrace my blog so much more because I never force it - if I don't feel it, I don't write it.

This post has given me time to decide what's on the menu for brunch today - avocado, bacon and tomato on toasted sourdough. I'll be whipping that up before marinading some chicken ready to put together some delicious chicken and vegetable skewers together for dinner tonight - keep your eyes peeled for those recipes.

How are you planning on spending this Bank Holiday weekend?

Fashion | Aqua Shard OOTN

Last weekend my friend Steve headed down to London to celebrate his birthday and after dinner in Mayfair we headed off to The Shard for cocktails.

It was my first time visiting The Shard and it definitely won't be the last, I will 100% be going back there for dinner and more cocktails. Given that I'm scared of heights I didn't think I'd be overawed by the building or the view and despite my legs feeling like jelly from the second I stepped into the lift I was completely blown away. The view across London at night is absolutely incredible and we were fortunate enough to have a view of my favourite London landmark, Tower Bridge.

The weather in London has been absolutely scorching lately so I had a bit of an outfit dilemma but I settled on the following outfit and I absolutely love it, this dress is already my new favourite!

Dress - Three Floor at ASOS (I don't recommend buying from Three Floor directly after an incredibly bad experience with them last year)
Bag - New Look
Shoes - Zara

Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation 'Hazelnut Beige'
Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder 'Dim Light'
Ben Nye Banana Powder
MAC Pro Studio Finish Skin Corrector 'Light Peach'
Illamasqua Highlighter 'Fondle'
Chanel Solei Tan De Chanel Bronzing Base
Illamasqua Blusher 'Rumour'
Illamasqua Blusher 'Sophie'
Maybelline Colour Tattoo 'On and On Bronze'
Charlotte Tilbury Rock n Kohl Eyeliner 'Bedroom Black'
Covergirl Lash Blast Mascara
MUFE HD Aqua Brow
L'Oreal L'Extraordinaire '601'

Cocoa Brown 1 Hour Tan Dark

Here's one without a filter and in natural light.

And one final cheeky selfie with Tower Bridge in the background

If you haven't been to The Shard then I fully recommend it, I have every intention of going back!

Lifestyle | Surviving Stress: Breathe Your Way to Balance

Source: Google

You may remember from a few posts ago, I mentioned having quite a bad panic attack and generally not a very nice time of things. Since then I've used the following technique whenever I've felt myself getting stressed or panicky and I've found it to be absolutely invaluable.

Before I explain the technique in further detail let me state that I have absolutely no medical qualifications (I can't even do First Aid), no psychology qualifications or anything in meditation - all I know is this works for me and maybe it will for you. Trying it won't harm you.

I picked this up in my GCSE drama classes at school, my teacher would use it to help us focus before rehearsals and I've used it many times over the years to help me sleep but I've also started to use it when I feel stressed, anxious or panicky.

Ideally you need to find somewhere reasonably private as I find it best to lay down whilst doing this but obviously that isn't always practical so just find somewhere you feel comfortable to close your eyes and "rest" for a few minutes.

Once you're settled close your eyes and focus on the sounds furthest away from you, for me this is usually the road outside and I hone in on the traffic noises, trying to hear as far away as possible. Focus on this for a few minutes.

Gradually focus on closer sounds but always try and keep your focus on that certain distance, this can be tricky when you're listening for distant sounds if there is immediate noise but try to block it out.

Focus on sounds closer and closer until eventually you're listening to only your own breathing as the closest possible sound and stay like this for a few minutes.

In all you can spend as long as you need doing this and spend however long you feel necessary on each sound and distance. I find 10 minutes is usually enough time.

Breathing slowly and focusing on the sounds around you should help to clear your mind and focus on the tasks in hand after.  I always find this successful in helping me calm down and I hope you do too and I've used it in various ways for numerous circumstances; it's particularly useful before an exam or job interview.

Recipe | A Salad for All Seasons with Florette*

A few weeks ago the lovely people at Florette* sent me the most beautiful book called A Salad For All Seasons by Harry Eastwood. Pages and pages of the most wonderful and inspiring salad ideas. I love salads, they're super quick to make, they can accompany most foods and they're a great 'go-to' food whilst also being pretty much completely healthy.

The book along with the Florette salad recipes  encouraged me to come up with the salad below. I took ideas from the website and the book and basically threw all of my ingredients together to create a filling salad.

  • Mixed tomatoes
  • Fresh buffalo mozzarella
  • Toasted baguette, ripped
  • Chopped radishes
  • Chopped cucumber
  • Sliced red onion
  • Olive and basil oil to dress
Tomato and mozzarella are one of my favourite food combinations, the salad adds extra freshness whilst the baguette helps fill it out and make it more substantial.

I'd thoroughly recommend picking up A Salad for All Seasons and checking out the Florette salad recipes, this is the next on my list to try: Peppercress Pesto Pasta

Fashion | Celeb Boutique 'Tao' Dress

Celeb Boutique may have recently rebranded as House of CB but this gem of a dress is still one of my all time favourites.

I won't lie, it isn't the easiest dress to get on - there's a zip at the side that isn't much benefit at all and the fact this dress is covered in sequins means I ended up with more than a few scratches before the night was out but even the fact I looked (and felt) like I'd fallen into a bush of nettles isn't enough to dampen my love for this dress.

I paired it with my trusty Zara orange heels and a nude clutch bag and headed out for a long overdue catch up with my friend Jo and The Brickyard in Romford which remains one of my favourite places. It has a great atmosphere and you only need one venue for all of your dinner/dancing needs. Perfect.

Baking | Strawberry Victoria Sponge

Strawberries are very much in season at the moment and a fresh Victoria sponge is one of the cornerstones of British tea time. I whipped this super simple yet utterly delicious cake up on a whim a few weekends ago and after receiving a great response on Instagram (beautyblogbrunette), I wanted to share the recipe with you all.

You will need
  • Two 8 inch sandwich tins, greased and floured
  • 115g self raising flour
  • 115g unsalted butter, softened
  • 115g golden caster sugar
  • 1/2 level teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons raspberry jam (mine was homemade, recipe coming soon)
  • Punnet of strawberries, hulled and sliced thinly. Save some whole for decorating.
  • 300ml double cream
  • 3 tablespoons icing sugar with extra to dust

1. Grease and flour your sandwich tins and pre-heat your oven to 170 degrees.

2. Sieve your flour and baking powder together into a large bowl. Add in the butter, golden caster sugar, eggs and vanilla extract and whisk until you have a smooth mixture - heavy but capable of falling off a spoon.

3. Divide the mixture evenly between the two prepared tins and bake for 30-35 minutes, until the sponges are golden brown in colour and springy to the touch.

4. I made my jam whilst my sponges were cooking to make sure everything was super fresh. If you're not making your own jam use this time to wash and slice your strawberries. Make sure you keep a few whole ones to decorate your cake with.

5. Remove your sponges from the oven and leave to cool completely on a wire rack.

6. Whisk your double cream until it becomes thick and starts to stiffen and then whisk in your 3 tablespoons of icing sugar, this is my favourite thing to do with double cream as it creates the most wonderful taste and texture.

7. If necessary, heat your jam over a low heat until it becomes smooth and almost runny but not quite a liquid. Turn out both of your sponges and spread a thick layer of jam across one sponge.

8. Cover the jam with a generous layer of the double cream, don't worry about it spilling out of the sides, messy is good!

9. Place your sliced strawberries on top of the cream and place the other sponge on top.

10. Using a table spoon, apply a few blobs of cream to the top sponge and put strawberries in the centre of the cream (you could pipe this on for a super polished finish but I wanted it to look homemade). Apply a light dusting of icing sugar and tuck in!

Enjoy your slice(s) of sponge with a good cup of tea and revel in what's left of our (wonderful) British summer.

As always I'd love to see your results if you try this so please link me your posts or tag me in your photos on Instagram!

Beauty | NOTD - Heavy Metal

As you will know by now, one of my favourite nail looks is a really neutral base with either an accent nail or my Ciate foils over the top. On this occasion I opted for the foils and this is my favourite nail look in ages!

Nail Polish: L'Oreal Peach Lingerie (this is AMAZING)
Foils: Ciate Very Colourfoil

This was such a lovely combination and one I will wear time and time again. I received so many compliments on it despite it being so incredibly simple.

Fashion | Pastel and Patent WIWT

I had such a great response to my last What I Wore to Work post and this picture proved quite popular on Instagram (beautyblogbrunette) so I wanted to share it with you all. It feels like a bit of a cop-out because it's quite similar to my last one but I'll make sure I mix it up in future.

Vest (with necklace): New Look
Trousers: Zara
Shoes: Zara
Bracelet: Dotti

I love the simplicity and neutral colour palette of the outfit. I never thought I'd buy pink trousers but as soon as I laid eyes on these in Zara I had to have them. They're the perfect dusky rose shade and the material is super comfortable. I purchased them in store last week but I can't find them on the website.

The vest was actually a night out purchase with it's various layers and v-neck but it works really well tucked into trousers or a skirt for work.

These patent sling backs from Zara were a great buy. They're neutral enough to go with a tonne of outfits during the summer, both at work and at the weekends and they're surprisingly comfortable given the heel height.

Recipe | Fruit Salad Smoothie

Smoothies are one of the quickest, easiest and tastiest ways to ensure you get your recommend daily amount of fruit (or vegetables but I personally prefer fruit smoothies). They make a great quick breakfast or snack to keep you going between meals.

Smoothies are so simple that this isn't really a recipe as such, more a list of ingredients but I think this is such a great combination I wanted to share. The below amounts will make one good sized glass, you can add as much or as little as you want.

You will need
  • Smoothie maker or blender
  • Handful of sliced strawberries
  • Handful of fresh pineapple cut into chunks
  • A whole banana, sliced
  • Half of lime (juice only)
  • Tablespoon of agave syrup (you can use honey, I prefer agave syrup)
  • Glass of orange juice (I squeezed my own, you can buy yours if it's easier)

1. Prepare all of your fruit.

2. Pour your juice in to your smoothie maker or blender and add your chopped fruit. Squeeze in your lime juice and blend until smooth. I find 45 seconds is more than enough time.

Super quick and easy, perfect to whizz up before work and the combinations are endless!

Are you a smoothie fan? Which is your favourite combination?

Beauty | Tom Ford 'Cherry Lush'

As you may know I'm currently half way through a professional qualification at work and as a reward for passing my first set of exams I decided to treat myself to a Tom Ford lipstick I'd been lusting after for months.

I've been looking for a shade like this for such a long time. It's the ultimate cherry red: bright whilst still being subtle (as subtle as red lipstick can be), deep but not dark and fresh whilst still being classic.

The formula of the Tom Ford lipsticks truly is something to behold. Creamy and moisturising with intense pigment and almost unbeatable staying power, they are worth every single penny which is good because they cost a grand total of 3600 of them... yes, that's right £36 for a lipstick. Well, I did say it was a treat...

Have you tried Tom Ford lipsticks? Which colour is your favourite?

Fashion | All Black Everything

I absolutely loved this outfit, it was so me just so unlike me all at the same time. Whilst I'm often known for my penchant for black clothes, this is quite possibly the only time I've ever worn a hat outside of the races!

You'd never guess this was a May outfit, it doesn't look summery in the slightest but neither did the weather! I wore it shopping as I wanted something comfortable, classic and warm enough to travel in but not too warm to wear inside - is that too much to ask for? Usually, yes.

Hat - New Look
Jacket - Zara
Vest - New Look
Jeans - Topshop
Wedge trainers - New Look
Bag - eBay

I've really gotten into eBay lately and I've found some fantastic items, if you'd be interested in seeing them let me know because I'm more than happy to show them off! This bag is probably my favourite non-dress related purchase. It's inspired by the Mulberry Willow and I decided to road test it to see if the style of the Willow would suit me - it would be a huge investment and I'm still not sure whether it's a novelty bag or one that will really be timeless.

I popped my Wonderland Wigs 3/4 Wig* in with a hat to disguise my terrible roots and hit the shops. I've got to say, I'm now fully converted to wearing large floppy hats. I've had this one for absolute years but I've never worn it before, now I'm grumpy that the weather is nice because I don't want to take it off!

What's your go-to shopping outfit?
